My name is Deryck Foster and I am currently based in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.  Photography has been my wife’s and my hobby for over four decades now and I finally turned professional some 20 years ago. My journey with photography began in childhood, proudly carrying an old Brownie box camera that once belonged to my father. Though I drifted away from it for a time, I rediscovered the camera at 21, and it quickly became more than a hobby—it became a lifelong passion. My first official commission, an ambitious audiovisual presentation for a tourism board using 1,200 slides and a soundtrack woven from 48 musical pieces, set the tone for the rest of my career: storytelling through imagery. Since then, I have carried a camera wherever I go, driven by the desire to preserve moments that matter.

Over the years, I have worked across news reportage, weddings, sports, landscapes, and wildlife. Each genre sharpened my skills and broadened my vision, but it is nature and wildlife that anchor me. The unpredictability of animal behaviour, the fleeting quality of light, and the profound connection to place continually challenge and inspire me. My mantra remains simple: to capture images that reflect both the harmony of nature and the honesty of the moment.

For me, photography is ultimately about light—its transformative power, its elusiveness, and its ability to shape what we see and feel in an instant. The camera is merely a tool; it is the photographer’s heart, eye, and intuition that interpret light and give it meaning. In this balance between art and technique I find peace. Every choice—lens, aperture, depth of field, timing—contributes to creating an image that resonates beyond the surface, one that can evoke emotion and reflection in the viewer.

My aim is not just to document but to engage. Each image is an invitation—to marvel at the intricacy of animal behaviour, to feel the atmosphere of a landscape, or to sense the rhythm of life captured in a fleeting instant. When someone connects with my work on an emotional level, seeing not only what I saw but what they themselves feel, that is the greatest reward.

Photography, for me, is drawing with light, but it is also a way of honouring creation and the Creator. It is my attempt to translate the wonder I experience into images that can inspire others to see the world with deeper appreciation and reverence.
